Welcome to the
McDowell Environmental Center!

Article about Growing Roots Teacher Workshop by the Sierra Club

This is a place where.....

a science class, standing in a cool, running stream, studies and learns about the creatures that live there,
students can see and feel exactly what they are being taught, all at the same time,
where students learn to be fascinated by a shiny beetle when yesterday they were afraid of it.

This is the essence of the McDowell Environmental Center. The Center is a non-profit, educational organization which provides one to five day outdoor learning experiences for school groups. This extension of the classroom strives to:

  • Increase the student's awareness and understanding of environmental science.
  • Encourage responsibility for the environment.
  • Foster cooperation and a community feeling.

The McDowell Environmental Center provides a non-sectarian program and welcomes all students regardless of race, religion or gender. Many classes can be adapted to accommodate individuals with special needs.
